Chapter Fifteen

A ringing phone wakes me. Thankfully, it’s not mine, so I just roll over and curl up against August as he reaches for the phone.

“Hello?”

I lean forward so I can hear who he’s talking to because I’m nosy and clearly don’t respect his personal space. It’s a woman, but I don’t know who it is.

“Where are you? You have a press release at nine, and it’s already seven-thirty.”

“I’ll get there in time,” he grumbles.

“And who is this guy you’ve been seen frolicking with?” she asks. “You know you’re supposed to have us vet anyone you’re planning on being around. Are you two dating?”

August looks over at me. “Are we dating?”

“Sure,” I mumble, still half asleep but secretly ecstatic. It’s like love birds are singing praises inside my head and I grab onto him even tighter.

“Yes,” he says to her.

I’m trying not to scare him off with my grinning.

“Are you sleeping with him? Oh my god, August! Your image! At least he’s cute. Do you know how much harder this would be if he were ugly? Your fans would riot.”

“She’s crazy,” I decide.

“Is that him? I can hear him. Oh hell. You just stress me out, August. Did you know that someone TP’d my house yesterday! Can you believe that?”

August instantly starts laughing.

“Shush,” I whisper. He’s clearly not very good at this villain stuff.

“I swear to heaven and hell if you know who did this, I’m going to…”

“Did what?” August asks. “Landon tickled me, and I giggled a little.”

I snicker as August grins and pulls me to him.

“Bring him.”

“To the press release? Isn’t the mayor just blabbing about boring stuff?”

“Yes, and then you’re going to introduce him and state that you are in a good and healthy monogamous relationship with the intent to marry,” she says.

“That’s moving a little fast, dontcha think?” he asks.

“Your fans are hungry, August. They will eat him alive.”

August squeezes my arm. “I’m positive Landon can hold his own.”

“They’ll eat him,” she says.

“I’ll fuck them up,” I tell her.

“Oh my god.” She sounds horrified when I’d think she’d be pleased with my ability to not let people walk all over me. “We need to put him through some classes, don’t we? Bring him in now! Let me meet him. I’ll write him a list of things he can and cannot say.”

August glances at me with a grin. “I’m sure he’ll be fine.”

I lean into the phone so she can hear me. “I’m very fine, thank you.”

“Get in here!”

“We’re coming!” August assures her.

He finishes up with her and instead of getting up, grabs me and pulls me into his arms. He guides me on top of him and I sink down, resting my head on his chest. “This is going to be a disaster.”

I can’t help but grin. “Me? You think I’m going to make things a disaster?”

“No, Valerie. She’s going to make it a disaster.”

“I can’t wait,” I say as I grudgingly get up. We get dressed, eat breakfast, and head out to the main building of Superheroes United.
